5 signs you're dragon boat ready

Hong Kong Living | June 16, 2015

If you work in a bank, you probably know what’s happening this Saturday. After weeks of strenuous training, your efforts will finally be tested on the big day. Want to know if you’ve got what it takes to win the races? Here are 5 signs that you’re dragon boat ready:

You’ve been working on your cardio.

Dragon boat is all about strength and endurance – to train your endurance, you’ve been doing extra cardio at least once a week, like running, cycling or swimming. The constant paddling might take a toll on everybody else, but it’s got nothing on you.

You’ve been doing strength training regularly.

A lot of people have the misconception that dragon boat is all about working the arms and shoulders, but the explosive power actually comes from the legs and body. To build muscles for the big day, you’ve been doing a series of weight training routines to build muscles from head to toe.

You’re eating protein like there’s no tomorrow.

Everyone knows that protein helps build muscles, so a strict diet can maximise your performance. To prep for race day, you’ve been bingeing on eggs, chicken breast and downing protein shakes all day and all night.

You’re planning to carb load right before the races.

To maximise your energy for the big day, you’re planning to increase your carb intake 1 or 2 days before race day. Your carb diet will include “good” carbs like pasta and wild rice.

You’re planning on wearing workout clothes on race day.

The clothes you wear for race day aren’t just a fashion statement – they can actually make or break your performance. If you’re planning to wear comfy workout clothes, you’re making a sound decision.
