Do you know much about the March 8 – International Women’s Day? Let’s have a look at the fun facts of it.

1. International Women’s Day is celebrated on March 8 every year. The name provides no clue of the date for english-speaking people but for Chinese people, the date is incorporated into the Chinese name of International Women’s Day, which can be literally translated as “three eight women’s day”.

2. It was originally called International Working Women’s Day. The festival originally intended to recognize working women for their economic, political and social achievements. Therefore, the name stressed especially on the word “working” to show respect to them.

3. 1975 was designated as the International Women’s Year. The United Nations officially supported the International Women’s Day starting from this year.

4. March 8 is an official holiday for around 28 countries in the world. For example, Afghanistan, Cambodia, Cuba, Russia, Ukraine, Vietnam, and so on. It can be seen that the day is celebrated internationally on different continents.

5. The holiday is only for women in these countries: China, Macedonia, Madagascar and Nepal. This time it would be men who would like to complain about gender inequality.

6. The theme for International Women’s Day 2017 proposed by the United Nations is ‘Women in the Changing World of Work: Planet 50-50 by 2030′ and the hashtag is #BeBoldForChange.

7. There are many creative celebration methods for the day. For example, in 2016, men in Guangdong Province of China wore dresses and high heels to hike up a mountain to celebrate IWD. In 2017, several strikes are planned in different countries all over the world such as “A Day Without A Woman” in the United States and “Strike4Repeal” in Ireland.

8. International Women’s Day has its counterpart – International Men’s Day which is celebrated on November 19 every year. However, IWD is more popular and well-known than IMD.
