Understanding the culture of Hong Kong

Hong Kong Living | April 21, 2020

There is little doubt that Hong Kong is one of the liveliest and interesting places to live on the planet. Known as a powerhouse financial business hub, it is a city with a great deal to offer anyone that chooses to settle there. With its diverse mix of cultures, Hong Kong brings a unique twist to the Asian experience that so many love.

Although close to mainland China, it is actually an autonomous republic with control of its own affairs. That makes it different from China in a political sense, however, there are many other distinctive features about Hong Kong that separate it from China, including the currency used and the more Western influences that are found there.

Understanding the culture of Hong Kong

To have a true flavor of Hong Kong’s vibrant culture and how it differs from mainland China, here are a few handy hints to help:

  • Business – as you would expect from a financial giant, business is very important in Hong Kong. There are a few differences to be aware of compared to conducting your operations in China though. The currency used is the Hong Kong Dollar and the Hong Kong tax year ends on the 31st January. That is a tradition inherited from the time when the British controlled the island. The work culture is one of working hard and playing hard, so be prepared to put some serious hours in if you work there!
  • Art – one area that Hong Kong really excels in is its thriving art scene. If you are an art lover, then it is a great place to see some of the best in the world. If you love contemporary Chinese art, then Art Futures Group are based in the city and provide an opportunity to become fully involved with the art scene.
  • Religion – within Hong Kong there is not much emphasis placed on religion although there is a mixture of faiths among the population. That is because of the diverse mixture of residents who come from all over the world. In comparison to China, the diversity this causes is much greater. The influence of Western culture and religion is also far greater in Hong Kong.
  • Food – although all people across Asia are obsessed with food, if you live in Hong Kong you are likely to be that little bit more particular! Hong Kong residents love their food, be it eating in a restaurant or the excellent street food. The cultural mix sees a real range of tasty cuisine to try when you are living in Hong Kong

Hong Kong’s culture will delight

If you have never been to Hong Kong before then it has a culture that will delight you. The mix between East and West on its streets gives a unique take on living in Asia. With a thriving art, business and food scene, you will not be short of things to do for work or play.
