4 best place for cyclists to live

Hong Kong Living | June 6, 2016

Cycling is a fun alternative to jogging and a good way to exercise, what’s more is that it is also a cheap way to get from one place to another while admiring the sceneries around you. While Hong Kong is indeed home to some fantastic cycle routes, most of them are not situated in the crowded Hong Kong Island or Kowloon areas, as they are indeed too crowded. Now we are not saying that you cannot cycle on the road, however doing so on the crowded traffic on Nathan Road might not be the best idea both for your safety and your lungs. So if you are a cyclist, where would be best for you to live so you can enjoy the best of Hong Kong’s cycle routes?

Tai Wai

Shing Mun River

Two of the most popular cycling routes starts from Tai Wai. In fact, if you venture out of the Tai Wai MTR station, you are sure to find a least a dozen bicycle rental places dotted around the streets. The routes are flat and easy to follow, and diverge towards Tai Po and Wu Kai Sha with the latter being a more recent addition. You will be cycling along the Shing Mun River before you choose to carry on towards Tai Po via Hong Kong Science Park or straight on towards the Ma On Shan Promenade.

Wu Kai Sha

Ma On Shan Promenade

Technically part of the Ma On Shan area, cycling was among the things I talked about there’s great to do in the Wu Kai Sha area. With the Man On Shan Promenade and the many beaches, cycling onwards from Tai Wai from here isn’t a bad idea at all. In fact, if you cycle from Wu Kai Sha out you can easily go towards Tai Po as well! Not to mention the Pak Shek Kok Promenade that you will go past from or to Tai Wai.

Tai Po

Cycling at Tai Mei Tuk

With the Tai Po Waterfront Park and the Tolo Harbour Cycling Track, what’s not to like about Tai Po? While it is a fair distance away from where the main action happens in Hong Kong, its cycling routes offer great sceneries along the coast and of the mountains. From here you can easily cycle to Wu Kai Sha, Ma On Sha or Tai Wai, or even further on to Tai Mei Tuk.

Yuen Long

The infamous pier at Nam Seng Wai

If you really want to experience the nature of Hong Kong, then Yuen Long is the place to be! Home to the Hong Kong Wetland Park, it’s been gaining popularity with tourists and locals alike as people flock to Nam Seng Wai.
